Shooting at Virginia State University

PETERSBURG, Va. — A shooting incident at Virginia State University early Wednesday morning left four individuals injured, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. Chesterfield County Police reported that officers arrived at the scene around 12:30 a.m. to find two men and two women suffering from gunshot wounds. Fortunately, all victims were transported to local hospitals with injuries that are not considered life-threatening. Authorities have confirmed that none of the victims or the suspects involved in the shooting are enrolled at the university for the upcoming fall semester. Classes are set to begin next week, but freshmen and student leaders are currently on campus for Welcome Week activities. University spokesperson Gwen Williams Dandridge emphasized that the incident appears to be isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the community. Two suspects, identified as 21-year-olds Xavier J. Gordon and Clyde D. White, were taken into custody at the scene. They face charges related to brandishing firearms, with one also charged for carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. Police have not yet linked them directly to the shooting itself, and it remains unclear if the suspects had any prior connection to the victims. The university was placed on lockdown during the incident, which has raised concerns among students about safety on campus.
