- Judge orders extradition of Calderon back to UK.
An American soldier, Isaac Calderon, 23, is set to be extradited to the UK following his alleged involvement in a serious road accident that left British nurse Elizabeth Donowho, 56, with severe injuries. The incident occurred on July 31, 2022, in Shucknall, Herefordshire, where Calderon reportedly crashed head-on into Donowho before fleeing to the United States. He was arrested in Houston, Texas, last month after failing to appear in court in the UK. Calderon had left the UK on November 25, 2022, shortly before a scheduled court appearance on December 1, 2023. He was undergoing military training in Texas when US Marshals apprehended him on an extradition warrant. During his extradition hearing, Calderon claimed that his absence from court was not an attempt to evade justice but rather due to financial constraints that compelled him to return to the US. The crash resulted in Donowho suffering a fractured sternum and two broken ankles, leaving her unable to walk for six weeks. Court documents reveal that Calderon admitted to vaping shortly before the collision and acknowledged that his driving was "definitely not safe." He described his actions as dangerous during a police interview, where he reacted with shock upon viewing footage of the crash. Further complicating the case, West Mercia police indicated that Calderon was associated with the Secret Service, contradicting previous statements from the US Embassy that he was in the UK solely as a private citizen.
