- The attacks were carried out through swatting, a dangerous hoax.
- Authorities are investigating the incidents to ensure the safety of public officials.
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson reported that her home was the target of two swatting attacks within the last 48 hours. In a statement on social media platform X, Benson expressed gratitude for the swift response from local and federal law enforcement, emphasizing the seriousness of swatting as a form of political violence. She asserted her commitment to ensuring secure and fair elections in Michigan, stating that such threats would not intimidate her or deter her from her responsibilities. The Michigan State Police have not released any information regarding the incidents at Benson's residence. This alarming situation follows similar incidents involving other political figures in the state. Democratic Representative Elissa Slotkin and former Republican Representative Mike Rogers also reported swatting attempts at their homes recently, highlighting a troubling trend of political violence. Slotkin's team indicated that law enforcement responded to her home in Holly after a false threat was sent to a local official last Thursday. The following day, Rogers' spokesperson confirmed that police were dispatched to his Livingston County home due to another false threat. Rogers noted that this marks the second time he has been targeted by swatting, with a previous incident occurring in 2013 during his congressional tenure. Both Slotkin and Rogers recently won their primaries and are now competing for the U.S. Senate seat previously held by Debbie Stabenow, underscoring the heightened tensions surrounding political campaigns in Michigan.
