Tragic drowning highlights dangers of migrant smuggling in Lake Turkana

In north-western Kenya, the perilous crossing of Lake Turkana has become a deadly route for migrants, particularly Eritreans fleeing religious persecution. Among the victims was 14-year-old Hiyab, who tragically drowned while attempting to reach safety. She was accompanied by her sister, who survived the harrowing journey that involved weeks of travel from Eritrea through Ethiopia to Kenya. Senait Mebrehtu, Hiyab's mother, traveled to the lake to understand the circumstances surrounding her daughter's death. Much of this dangerous migration is facilitated by smugglers who take advantage of the desperate situation many Eritreans face due to regional conflicts in Ethiopia and Sudan. A female smuggler operating in Kenya disclosed that Lake Turkana has increasingly emerged as a chosen route for migrants seeking passage into Kenya. She earns substantial fees for her services, highlighting the lucrative nature of the trafficking trade. Tragically, Hiyab and other migrants encountered severe danger during their crossing, as strong winds contributed to the capsizing of their boat. Witnesses described the scene, where several individuals drowned after the boat's motor failed. A total of seven lives were lost during this incident, underlining the real risks that accompany the search for asylum and better living conditions. Despite some migrants settling in Kenya, many view it as a temporary stop before continuing to Uganda, Rwanda, or South Africa, where they believe obtaining refugee status might be easier. The female smuggler acknowledged the grim realities faced by many women and girls during these journeys, including the risk of sexual abuse and forced marriage to male smugglers. This heartbreaking situation not only reflects the dangers of human trafficking but also serves as a stark reminder of the desperation forcing individuals to undertake such perilous journeys.
