On Thursday, November 7, 2024, the Allegheny County Health Department conducted an inspection at Tan Lac Vien, a Vietnamese restaurant located on Murray Avenue in Squirrel Hill. The inspector discovered numerous health code violations, including rodent droppings throughout the establishment, particularly in a case of contaminated daikon radish, which was discarded. Additionally, the inspection revealed roaches in the basement and fluid seeping through the walls onto food preparation areas, posing an imminent hazard. As a result, the health department ordered the immediate closure of the restaurant. As of Monday afternoon, November 11, 2024, the restaurant remained closed, with the health department's website set to update when it reopens. The Food Safety Program oversees approximately 8,500 food businesses in Allegheny County, ensuring they adhere to health standards to prevent food-borne illnesses.
