Boeing Secures Major Order from Korean Air at Farnborough Airshow

FARNBOROUGH, England — In a significant boost for Boeing, Korean Air has placed an order for at least 40 wide-body jetliners, including 20 of the yet-to-be-certified 777X model. This announcement, made during the Farnborough Airshow, underscores a renewed confidence in Boeing as it navigates ongoing challenges. The order also includes 20 787-10 Dreamliner aircraft, both of which are designed for long-range travel. Korean Air CEO Walter Cho anticipates the delivery of these planes later this decade. The 777X, which has faced delays and is currently undergoing certification flight tests with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, represents a critical milestone for Boeing. The company has been grappling with production setbacks attributed to post-COVID supply chain issues and a series of safety concerns, including recent manufacturing flaws in its popular 737 Max model. Despite these challenges, Cho expressed his confidence in Boeing, stating, "If I wasn't assured, I would not have ordered it." Korean Air's decision to place this order comes as the airline also competes with Airbus, having previously ordered the A350-1000 aircraft. Cho noted that the airline's flagship aircraft would be determined by whichever model is delivered first and on time, highlighting the competitive landscape in the aviation market. This order not only reflects Korean Air's trust in Boeing's recovery but also emphasizes the ongoing demand for wide-body aircraft as airlines look to expand their fleets in a post-pandemic world.
