Republican Challenger Emerges for Chris Murphy
- Sen. Chris Murphy is up for reelection in Connecticut.
- A GOP challenger has been revealed after a contentious primary.
- The Connecticut Senate race is heating up with a new contender.
Military veteran Matthew Corey has emerged victorious in the Republican primary, positioning himself to challenge Democratic Senator Chris Murphy in the upcoming fall election. Corey, who operates a bar in Hartford, previously faced Murphy in 2018 and was the runner-up at the state GOP’s nominating convention in May. In a surprising turn, he defeated Gerry Smith, an insurance agent and small-town official who had the backing of the Connecticut Republican Party. Despite being out-fundraised during the primary, with Corey raising just over $30,000 compared to Smith’s $62,000, Corey ended the cycle with a stronger financial position. He reported approximately $32,000 in cash on hand, while Smith had only about $4,200 left. However, Corey faces a daunting challenge in the general election, as Connecticut has not elected a Republican senator since 1982, and the state has leaned heavily Democratic in recent elections. Senator Murphy, who is seeking a third term, has a significant financial advantage, having raised nearly $13 million this election cycle and entering the general election with $9.7 million in cash. Murphy gained national prominence following the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012, when he was a congressman representing Newtown. As the incumbent, he is widely regarded as the favorite to retain his seat, which would be a crucial win for Democrats aiming to maintain their slim Senate majority.
