Story

BRUSSELS – The European Union is set to include the status of the Ibar Bridge in Kosovska Mitrovica in the agenda for the next round of dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, according to European Commission spokesperson Nabila Masrali. During a recent briefing, Masrali confirmed that despite actions taken by the Kosovo government that contradict this dialogue, the bridge remains a critical issue for discussion. The Ibar Bridge serves as a significant divide in Kosovska Mitrovica, separating the predominantly Albanian southern part from the northern section, which is home to a 95 percent Serbian population. Tensions have escalated as Albanians have attempted to cross the bridge into the northern area, resulting in clashes that necessitate the ongoing presence of Italian Carabinieri from the KFOR contingent to maintain order. Authorities in Pristina have announced plans to open the bridge, a move that has faced strong opposition from the EU, OSCE, EULEX, KFOR, and the United States. These entities emphasize that any developments regarding the bridge must be addressed within the framework of the ongoing dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, facilitated by the EU. Masrali indicated that the timing for the next dialogue meeting will be announced in due course, underscoring the EU's commitment to resolving the contentious issues surrounding the Ibar Bridge as part of broader efforts to stabilize relations between the two parties.
