GOP Senator Calls for Investigation into College DEI Funding
- Sen. Bill Cassidy is urging an investigation into colleges using federal funding for DEI initiatives.
- The Department of Education watchdog might look into how federal funds are being used for diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.
- The issue raises concerns about the allocation of taxpayer dollars in higher education.
Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) has initiated a call for an investigation into the use of federal tax dollars by colleges and universities to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) ideologies. In a letter to Sandra D. Bruce, the inspector general of the Department of Education, Cassidy expressed concern that taxpayer funds should prioritize educational improvement rather than support divisive ideologies that may harm students. He highlighted a significant increase in DEI initiatives, noting a 60% rise in membership in the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education from 2020 to 2022. Cassidy criticized DEI programs for failing to foster true inclusivity, arguing that they often segregate individuals based on race and heritage. He pointed out that while institutions are investing heavily in DEI initiatives, these programs can lead to discrimination and intimidation on campuses. His letter also emphasized the contradiction of rising tuition costs alongside increased federal funding for DEI efforts, citing examples such as the University of Michigan and the University of Virginia, which spend millions annually on DEI staff. The senator, a co-sponsor of the DISMANTLE Act aimed at eliminating federal DEI funding, is requesting a comprehensive report on the use of Title IV funding for DEI-related expenses. He seeks to uncover which universities mandate DEI training or implicit bias assessments. The Department of Education has not commented on the matter, while the inspector general's office acknowledged receipt of Cassidy's letter but refrained from further comment.
