- The team is in need of quarterback depth for the upcoming games.
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills are actively searching for additional quarterback depth after head coach Sean McDermott announced that third-string quarterback Shane Buechele is out indefinitely due to a neck injury. The specifics of the injury were not disclosed, but McDermott noted that Buechele played through the pain during the team’s preseason-opening loss to the Chicago Bears, where he completed 6 of 10 passes for 53 yards and an interception. Buechele's performance against Chicago included being sacked six times and rushing for 22 yards on three carries. His injury raises concerns for the Bills, who are already managing the playing time of their starter, Josh Allen, and backup Mitch Trubisky to mitigate the risk of further injuries. Allen played only the first quarter against the Bears, and his future playing time in the preseason remains uncertain. In light of Buechele's situation, McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane are in discussions to sign a third quarterback in the coming days. This move is deemed essential as the Bills prepare for a joint practice with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, followed by a preseason game against them on Sunday. The Bills will conclude their preseason schedule with a home game against the Carolina Panthers on August 24. Buechele, who has yet to make an appearance in an NFL regular-season game, is in his second training camp with the Bills after entering the league as an undrafted rookie with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021.
