Ireland reduces energy levy but bills still rise

In Ireland, a reduction in the Public Service Obligation (PSO) levy on electricity bills is set to be announced, with the current annual charge at €42.25. This reduction is expected to save households approximately €23 per year and small businesses around €90. However, government sources acknowledge that this measure is just a small part of the broader strategies being implemented to lower energy costs for consumers. Concerningly, electricity bills are projected to rise by at least €83 annually due to essential upgrades for the power system, prompting calls for assistance from the government towards consumers facing high energy bills. Recognizing the urgent need for reform, a new group has been established by Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke, focusing on reducing operational costs for businesses. The group comprises various stakeholders, including business owners and state agencies, with a mission to tackle structural issues driving up costs.
