Story

On December 9, 2024, in Canada, The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) announced its call for entries for the 2025 awards and fellowships. The CJF aims to honor the outstanding work of journalists and news organizations amid ongoing challenges within the industry. The submission deadline for all entries is set for January 24, 2025. Chris Waddell, the CJF Awards Committee Chair, emphasized that the CJF Awards celebrate exceptional journalism produced by both large and small news organizations across Canada. Among the notable opportunities available, the newly introduced CJF-CP News Creator Fellowship is designed to support six aspiring news creators. This fellowship offers comprehensive training and mentorship from editors and journalists at The Canadian Press, focusing on creating engaging local news videos for various platforms. Another significant initiative is the CJF Black Journalism Fellowship Program, which seeks to amplify Black voices and nurture future media leaders by providing opportunities for early-career Black journalists through six-month placements at participating newsrooms. The CJF-CBC Indigenous Journalism Fellowships cater to three First Nation, Inuit, or Métis journalists who hold between one to ten years of experience. Successful applicants will explore pertinent issues at CBC Indigenous. Additionally, the Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award offers an early-career photojournalist a unique opportunity to gain experience through a paid internship at The Canadian Press. Other awards, such as the CJF Award for Climate Solutions Reporting and the Jackman Award for Excellence in Journalism, recognize excellence in reporting and its impact on communities. The CJF has been an advocate for journalistic excellence since its establishment in 1990, facilitating professional growth and recognition for journalism in Canada. By encouraging submissions for these awards and fellowships, the CJF aims to strengthen journalism within the country and celebrate the vital role it plays in society.
