On Saturday, September 14, a new intercity train service will connect Bristol, Bath, and Oxford, marking the return of direct rail travel between these cities after a 20-year hiatus. The service will operate only on Saturdays, with two trains running each way. Passengers will benefit from a significant time saving, as the new route reduces travel time by 27 minutes compared to previous journeys that required a change at Didcot Parkway. The first train departs Bristol Temple Meads at 10:18 AM, making a stop at Bath Spa before arriving in Oxford at 11:29 AM. The return journey from Oxford will begin at 12:03 PM, taking 69 minutes to reach Bristol. This new service also includes stops at Chippenham and Swindon, enhancing connectivity for local residents. The initiative comes in response to changing travel patterns post-COVID, with GWR aiming to expand its leisure offerings. Mark Hopwood, GWR's managing director, expressed optimism about the potential of the Bristol-Oxford route. Local leaders, including Swindon Borough Council's Jim Robbins, have welcomed the service, hoping it will lead to more frequent and permanent connections in the future. Despite the benefits, only part of the journey can utilize electric traction due to the lack of electrification between Bristol and Chippenham. The project has faced scrutiny, with rail minister Peter Hendy commenting on the challenges of previous electrification efforts. Additionally, GWR plans to open a revived station at Ashley Down on September 28, further improving local transport options.
