Philippines enhances Navy's capabilities with Turkish machine guns

In April 2025, the Philippines engaged in a significant defense procurement by awarding a contract to Türkiye's Sarsilmaz Silah Sanayi A.Ş. The contract, valued at approximately PHP 35,606,500 (USD 640,917), is for the supply of up to 16 SAR 127 MT .50 caliber machine guns. These armored weaponry systems are intended to equip two upcoming Landing Platform Docks (LPDs) that are currently being constructed at PT PAL Indonesia's shipyard. The delivery of these vessels is scheduled between 2026 and 2027, aimed to enhance the amphibious assault and logistics capabilities of the Philippine Navy, which is vital given the country's focus on strengthening its maritime defenses against increasing regional threats, especially from the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). Furthermore, the choice of Turkish-made armaments follows a rigorous public bidding process respecting Republic Act 9184's implementing rules, underscoring the Philippines' commitment to transparency and efficiency in military acquisitions. Given geopolitical tensions in the South China Sea, this procurement symbolizes not only a step towards modernizing the Philippine Navy but also reinforces the long-standing alliance between the Philippines and the United States in terms of defense, even as Turkey operates independently as a NATO member.
