Story

The Bay of Biscay, known for its rough waters, provided a challenging backdrop for a family surfing lesson in Anglet, near Biarritz. While the parents struggled with wipe-outs, their 13-year-old daughter excelled, showcasing her surfing skills alongside her 11-year-old brother. The family had traveled from Portsmouth to Santander via a smooth 40-hour ferry ride, which turned out to be a relaxing experience filled with good food, dolphin sightings, and onboard entertainment. Upon arriving in the Basque Country, the family indulged in a culinary adventure at the family-run restaurant Rio-Oja, enjoying a feast of anchovies, peppers, tuna, and jamón croquettes. The journey continued along the picturesque coast road into France, where they admired the iconic white and red timber-framed houses and expansive beaches that attract surfers of all levels. With guidance from their instructor, the family aimed to improve their surfing skills, though the mother humorously noted her frequent tumbles into the water. The family also explored the charming village of Sare, recognized as one of France’s most beautiful villages. With its narrow streets and stunning mountain views, Sare offers a glimpse into the region's culture, including two large pelota courts. A visit to La Rhune, the highest peak in the area, is accessible via a cog railway, promising breathtaking vistas for those who venture to the summit.
