Volunteers clear over 80 propane tanks in Seattle cleanup effort

Over the Labor Day weekend, volunteers discovered and removed more than 80 propane tanks from an unsanctioned homeless encampment located in a greenbelt near the Elliot Bay Marina. This area, which borders Puget Sound, has been a site of concern due to the potential dangers posed by these tanks, especially given the average of two encampment-related fires reported daily in Seattle from January to June 2024. Emerson, a volunteer, highlighted the risks associated with the tanks, describing them as a 'ticking timebomb' that could lead to explosions if ignited by sparks or fire. The volunteers, including members from a non-profit organization and two other groups, not only focused on removing the propane tanks but also aimed to build trust with the homeless individuals living in the area. They have been working with Paul, a homeless man whose camp contained the tanks, to connect him with services and housing options. This approach emphasizes the importance of personal relationships in encouraging individuals to transition from living in encampments to more stable housing. Their efforts resulted in the removal of the propane tanks and significant cleanup of garbage and debris from the green space. Volunteers plan to return the following weekend to continue their work, demonstrating a commitment to improving the safety and cleanliness of the area. According to the latest Point-In-Time Survey, over 16,000 individuals identified as homeless in King County, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the city. The Seattle Homelessness Plan of Action has made efforts to extend shelter offers to unsheltered individuals, but the acceptance rate remains low, indicating a need for continued outreach and support.
