Story

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — As the new academic year approaches, Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) is implementing several initiatives aimed at bolstering the safety of students and staff. Michael McNamara, the district's chief operations officer, emphasized that enhancing preparedness is a top priority. The district has introduced a new emergency response protocol that outlines five critical actions: hold, secure, lockdown, evacuate, and shelter, alongside improved safety drills. To support the new protocol, PPS will install informative signage in every classroom and distribute educational materials to families. This initiative aims to ensure that both students and staff are well-informed about the safety procedures. McNamara highlighted the importance of these measures in fostering a secure learning environment. In addition to the emergency protocols, the district is launching a visitor management program in collaboration with Raptor Technologies. This system will provide real-time and historical reporting on visitor activity, enhancing security measures within the schools. The pilot program will initially be implemented at select locations, including the administration building and a few elementary and middle schools, with plans for a district-wide rollout if successful. Training for staff on the new safety protocols is scheduled to be completed by August 26, coinciding with the first day of school for most students, excluding kindergarten. These comprehensive safety initiatives reflect PPS's commitment to creating a secure educational environment for all.
