Story

On Thursday, Taiwan's Ministry of Justice announced the sentencing of eight military and former military personnel for their involvement in providing classified intelligence and propaganda materials to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The sentences ranged from 18 months to 13 years, reflecting the severity of the offenses. The Ministry of National Defense expressed its respect for the High Court's decision and emphasized plans to enhance security training in light of increasing espionage activities attributed to the CCP. The investigation, which began in 2022, revealed that Chen X-hsin had been recruited by CCP officials to facilitate the collection of military intelligence. Chen paid former military members Hsiao Hsiang-yun and Hsieh Ping-cheng to assist in identifying and managing informants. Hsiao received a 13-year sentence, while Hsieh was sentenced to eight years. Other defendants, including Hsieh Meng-shu and four others, received varying sentences for their roles in the espionage activities, with one individual, Lu X-fang, also producing a propaganda video for the CCP. A report released concurrently highlighted a significant rise in CCP espionage cases involving the military over the past 12 years, with 113 suspects linked to 40 cases from 2011 to 2023. The report noted that the CCP has employed tactics such as debt traps targeting Taiwanese military personnel, leveraging social media and gaming platforms to extract intelligence. The increasing use of cryptocurrencies has further complicated investigative efforts, presenting unprecedented challenges for Taiwan's Armed Forces.
