Pennsylvania American Water to replace 357 lead service lines in Pittsburgh

In the United States, particularly in Pennsylvania, a significant development concerning public health and water safety has been announced. Pennsylvania American Water has started to take proactive measures to ensure the quality of water by addressing the presence of lead service lines in its distribution network. The project will replace approximately 357 lead service lines identified in the cities of Pittsburgh and Mount Oliver Borough. The initiative is scheduled to start in mid-June, with contractors expected to canvass these areas to identify unknown service line materials, beginning around June 16. The project is funded through a combination of a $1.6 million low-interest loan and a $3.3 million grant from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority, indicative of the state’s commitment to infrastructure improvement and public health safety. JoAnn Hepler, Senior Manager for Water Quality and Environmental Compliance at Pennsylvania American Water, emphasized that delivering safe and clean water is the company's top priority. While the current water quality meets regulatory standards, the proactive replacement of lead service lines will further assure customers of their health and safety. During the canvassing process, contractors will wear high-visibility vests and carry contractor ID badges, making their presence known to residents. If any lead or galvanized steel lines are detected, affected customers will be provided information on how to proceed with the line replacement at no direct cost. The overall goal of this replacement initiative is not just to improve the water quality but also to align with broader efforts to eliminate lead service lines from the public water supply system, thereby safeguarding the health and peace of mind of the community members served.
