ROME (AP) — During her 66th birthday celebrations in Pompeii, Madonna revealed her commitment to fund an artistic initiative aimed at empowering local youth. While touring the Pompeii archaeological park with its director, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, she interacted with teenagers participating in “Sogno di Volare” (Dream of Flying), a project that has been running for four years. This initiative features young artists performing re-adapted comedies by Aristophanes, starting at the historic Teatro Grande in Pompeii and extending to other theaters across Italy. Madonna pledged approximately 250,000 euros ($275,000) to support the project for one year. Zuchtriegel emphasized the significance of this funding, stating that it is crucial for the local community, particularly for youth in economically disadvantaged southern towns where school dropout and unemployment rates are notably high. He announced that the show, backed by Madonna’s foundation, is set to take the stage at Pompeii’s Teatro Grande in May 2025. In addition to her philanthropic efforts, Madonna's visit to Italy included a private evening tour of the archaeological site, countering media speculation about a lavish birthday celebration. Naples Prefect Michele Di Bari confirmed the cultural nature of her visit, highlighting her admiration for Pompeii. Madonna, whose family roots trace back to Italy’s Abruzzo region, has been enjoying her time in Italy, reportedly as a guest of fashion designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. The pop icon recently concluded her “Celebration Tour” with a free concert in Rio de Janeiro, marking a significant moment in her career.
