Story

A new variant of the monkeypox virus, known as the clade 1b strain, has emerged, first identified in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and now confirmed in Sweden and Pakistan. Health experts warn that this strain is significantly more dangerous, being ten times deadlier than previous variants. The World Health Organization (WHO) had previously issued warnings regarding a less severe strain, clade 2, which remains present in the UK with approximately 180 cases reported this year. The clade 1 strain is characterized by its ability to cause severe symptoms, including blisters on the face and body, primarily transmitted through contact with fluid from these lesions during sexual activity. Initial symptoms can resemble those of flu or COVID-19, complicating early detection. Professor Labu emphasized the need for heightened awareness, as the new strain poses a serious threat that should not be underestimated. Concerns are growing regarding public complacency, particularly following the 2022 outbreak, which predominantly affected men who have sex with men. This has led to a false sense of security among other demographics. However, the clade 1 strain is now spreading among heterosexual populations, indicating a broader risk. While the disease typically presents with mild symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and a rash with multiple lesions, some individuals may experience more severe illness. Experts urge vigilance and proactive measures to combat the spread of this new variant.
