- The Orioles are looking to build on their recent success under new coaching staff.
In Baltimore, Robinson Chirinos was appointed as the new bench coach for the Orioles on a Monday, taking over from Fredi González. Chirinos, who is 40 years old, has a substantial background in Major League Baseball, having played as a catcher for 11 seasons and finishing his playing career with the Orioles in 2022. He accumulated a batting average of .226 with 95 home runs and 306 RBIs while playing for various teams including Tampa Bay, Texas, Houston, New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, and Baltimore. Fredi González had a five-season tenure with the Orioles, where he served as a coach and spent the last three years in the role of bench coach. Before his time in Baltimore, González was the manager for the Florida Marlins and the Atlanta Braves, covering several years in Major League Baseball. Under manager Brandon Hyde, the Orioles had just completed their sixth season and finished second in the American League East with a record of 91 wins and 71 losses. This achievement was particularly notable considering the team dealt with significant pitching injuries throughout the season. The Orioles' season ended when they were swept by Kansas City in the American League Wild Card Series. In addition to the coaching change, other staff updates were made, including Cody Asche being named hitting coach after two seasons as the offensive strategy coach. Several other coaching staff were confirmed to continue in their current roles, reflecting a commitment to maintaining continuity as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
