Story

In a stark revelation, Ambadas Danve, the leader of the opposition in Maharashtra's legislative council, highlighted the alarming rate of farmer suicides in the Beed district, located in the Marathwada region. During a press conference on Thursday, Danve criticized both the central and state governments for their silence on this pressing issue, particularly following a recent visit by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and other top officials to an agriculture exhibition in the district. He accused the leaders of feigning concern for farmers while neglecting the crisis at hand. Danve pointed out that despite the high number of suicides, which he claims are the highest in the Beed district, none of the visiting leaders addressed the issue during their speeches. He emphasized that the Modi government has introduced 109 varieties of crops that require less water, yet these resources are not being made accessible to farmers in Maharashtra. He urged the government to ensure these seeds are available in the market to alleviate the struggles faced by local farmers. Recent data from the Marathwada divisional commissioner’s office reveals a grim statistic: 1,088 farmers have died by suicide across eight districts in the region in 2023, with Beed accounting for the highest number at 269. The situation appears to be worsening, as 430 suicides have already been reported in the first half of 2024, with Beed again leading the count at 101 deaths, raising urgent questions about the effectiveness of government interventions.
