Dan Gilbert, co-founder and chairman of Rocket Companies, delivered a keynote address at the Detroit Economic Club, focusing on the revitalization of Detroit. He highlighted his journey in the real estate industry, starting with obtaining his license at 19 and founding Rock Financial in 1985. Gilbert emphasized the unique culture at Rocket Companies as a key factor in its success, particularly in the online mortgage sector. During the event, Gilbert also addressed personal challenges, including the loss of his son Nick to neurofibromatosis in 2023. In response, his foundation is investing in a new medical center in Detroit, which will collaborate with the Henry Ford hospital system to provide care for neurofibromatosis patients and include a Shirley Ryan AbilityLab for neuro rehabilitation. Gilbert discussed the issue of talent drain in Michigan, noting that many young graduates leave for larger cities. To combat this, he moved Rocket Companies' headquarters to Detroit, aiming to attract young talent by contributing to the city's redevelopment. He mentioned the importance of understanding the needs of young professionals through regular surveys. Transportation improvements were also a topic of discussion, with Gilbert acknowledging the QLine's role in downtown Detroit but stressing the need for further expansion of transportation services to enhance the city's appeal to potential residents and workers.
