US probes Jeep SUVs and pickups for potential fire risks after shutdown

U.S. auto safety regulators have initiated an investigation into reports of engine fires occurring in certain Jeep SUVs and pickup trucks, specifically the Wrangler and Gladiator models from the 2021 to 2023 model years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received nine complaints regarding these incidents, including one that resulted in an injury. Most reports indicate that the fires originated from the passenger side of the engine compartment, raising significant safety concerns for vehicle occupants and those nearby. The investigation was prompted by alarming reports of fires igniting even when the ignition was turned off, which poses a serious risk of injury and property damage without warning. Investigators have reached out to Stellantis, the manufacturer of Jeep, and learned about additional 'thermal events' linked to a power steering pump electrical connector. This information has led the NHTSA to assess the frequency and underlying causes of these incidents. Currently, no recall has been issued, but the possibility remains as the investigation unfolds. Michael Brooks, the executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, has advised Jeep owners to park their vehicles outdoors until the situation is clarified, emphasizing the potential for property damage. As the investigation progresses, the NHTSA aims to determine the scope of the problem and ensure the safety of Jeep owners. The cooperation of Stellantis in this inquiry will be crucial in addressing the concerns raised by consumers and preventing future incidents.
