Costco Faces Class Action Settlement Over Flushable Wipes
- Costco has agreed to a $2 million settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit regarding false advertising related to their flushable wipes.
- The lawsuit claimed that the wipes, marketed as flushable, were actually causing plumbing issues.
- Costco denies any wrongdoing while opting to settle the case to avoid further legal expenses.
Consumers who purchased Kirkland Signature Moist Flushable Wipes from Costco between July 1, 2011, and May 31, 2017, may be eligible for a share of a $2 million class action lawsuit settlement. The lawsuit, which Costco has not admitted to wrongdoing in, addresses claims of false advertising regarding the product's flushability. According to Top Class Actions, many consumers assert they would not have bought the wipes had they known they were not genuinely flushable. Class members can receive $1.30 for each product purchased, with payments ranging from a minimum of $7.50 to a maximum of $55.90 for up to 43 products. Notably, proof of purchase is not required to claim the settlement. Interested consumers must submit their claims by August 9 through the designated website. Concerns about the actual flushability of these wipes have been echoed by professionals in the field. Alexander Kraus, a maintenance worker for Kenosha Water Utility, expressed skepticism about the term "flushable," citing the intact condition of wipes found in sewer systems. He noted that these wipes often contribute to sewer backups, particularly in apartment complexes, leading to costly repairs and maintenance. Despite the ongoing legal issues, Costco continues to sell the flushable wipes, with current packaging advising consumers to "never flush more than one wipe at a time." The retailer has yet to comment on the settlement or the implications of the lawsuit.
