Story

Rwanda is positioning itself to become a significant player in the global medical marijuana market following the legalization of medical cannabis in 2021. This move came after a long advocacy period, starting with a proposal from the Minister of Health 11 years prior. KKOG Rwanda has invested $10 million to develop a cannabis production facility in Musanze, which is expected to be operational by September 2024. Currently, 70% of the facility's installations are complete, and production is on track to begin as scheduled. The country's favorable climate and fertile land are ideal for cannabis cultivation, with projections indicating that one hectare could yield up to EUR 10 million ($11.05 million). KKOG plans to produce 5,000 kg of cannabis per hectare, tapping into the growing global demand for medical marijuana, particularly for pain relief. The global cannabis market is anticipated to grow from $57.18 billion to $444.34 billion by 2030, driven largely by medical applications. To facilitate this growth, the Rwandan government has allocated 35 hectares of land in Musanze to five potential investors, with KKOG being the first to commence construction. Despite high production costs due to limited machinery availability, the potential profits are expected to outweigh initial investments. CEO Rene Joseph emphasized the importance of collaboration with government partners to fully realize this opportunity. While Rwanda embraces medical cannabis, recreational use remains illegal, with strict penalties in place. This careful approach reflects the country's commitment to developing a responsible and profitable cannabis industry while ensuring public health and safety.
