Bestway, a Hong Kong-based spa manufacturer, has issued a recall for approximately 866,000 units of its AirJet and HydroJet spa pumps due to a significant fire hazard. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported that these pumps can overheat, leading to the ignition of their plastic casings. This alarming issue has resulted in at least three reported fires, one of which tragically caused a death in Kansas City, Missouri, while another incident led to considerable property damage. The affected pumps were sold between May 2021 and May 2024, with model numbers including P05332, P05339, P05711, P05807, P07000, P07001, P05511, P07034, and P07572. Consumers are urged to stop using these products immediately to prevent further incidents. The recall highlights the importance of consumer safety and the need for vigilance regarding potential hazards in household products. In response to the recall, Bestway is offering consumers a choice between a free replacement pump that does not pose a fire risk or a refund of up to $189. The original retail prices for these spa pumps ranged from $400 to $790, indicating a significant financial impact for consumers who may have purchased them. This recall serves as a critical reminder for consumers to stay informed about product safety recalls and to take immediate action when notified of potential dangers associated with their purchased items. The CPSC continues to monitor the situation to ensure consumer safety and prevent future incidents.
