Kalaat M'Gouna sees record rose harvest amid favorable conditions

In Kalaat M'Gouna, Morocco, the region is experiencing a remarkable rise in the production of the Damask rose due to favorable climatic conditions. Mild temperatures, consistent sunlight, and low humidity have been prevalent, creating an optimal environment for cultivating this iconic flower. This year, an exceptional amount of precipitation and several desert downpours have further bolstered the growth. The local agricultural authorities estimate a harvest of about 4,800 tons, significantly surpassing the average yield from recent years, specifically the 2020-2023 period, according to the Regional Office for Agricultural Development in Ouarzazate. The small mountain town, renowned for its roses, transforms every year into a vibrant hub during the International Rose Festival, an event that has been celebrated for 60 years. The festival showcases everything rose-related, from uniquely shaped monuments to themed taxis and jumble sales of heart-shaped rose ornaments. Vendors promote various rose products in multiple languages, highlighting the cultural significance and economic value of the rose industry. The roses not only contribute aesthetically to the landscape but are also vital for local livelihoods, as they create more than 120 days of employment per hectare within a community where job opportunities are limited. Women in the fields work tirelessly, earning an average of 80-100 Moroccan dirhams daily (equivalent to $8-10) during the harvest season. The collected roses are subsequently processed at local distilleries, where they undergo sorting and steaming in alembic stills to extract rosewater and oil. These products have gained international demand, being recognized for their soothing fragrances and medicinal properties. The booming market for rose-based products, especially in cosmetics and wellness, has prompted local officials to explore methods to encourage farmers to increase production in the coming years. The overwhelming success of this year's harvest reinforces the importance of the agricultural sector in sustaining the community's economy.
