GE HealthCare and AWS Develop AI for Medicine

GE HealthCare announced a collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Thursday to develop generative artificial intelligence models aimed at improving the analysis of complex medical data. The healthcare sector generates nearly one-third of global data, yet a significant portion remains inaccessible due to the disparate formats and systems used to store patient records, images, and insurance information. A Deloitte report highlights that up to 97% of hospital-generated data goes unused, underscoring the need for more efficient data utilization. The partnership seeks to create tools that will assist clinicians in leveraging data more effectively across various healthcare operations, including screenings, diagnoses, and workflow management. Dr. Taha Kass-Hout, GE HealthCare's global chief science and technology officer, emphasized that the anticipated tools will empower hospitals and clinicians to maximize the data at their disposal. The collaboration with AWS is expected to accelerate the development of web-based medical imaging applications, enhancing access to analytics for radiologists and other healthcare professionals. In addition to healthcare applications, GE HealthCare plans to utilize generative AI to improve its internal productivity. One of the initial focuses will be on employing Amazon Q Developer to provide real-time code suggestions for software developers, thereby increasing efficiency. Kass-Hout assured that GE HealthCare adheres to strict testing and standards before launching products, and the same rigor will apply to the new AI applications, which will not be trained on customer data. Initially, the new models and applications will be available to GE HealthCare employees and select customers, with plans for broader accessibility in the future.
