Matthew Mott Dismissed as Coach of England's White-Ball Cricket Team
- Matthew Mott has been sacked as the coach of the England men's white-ball cricket team with immediate effect.
- His dismissal follows a series of disappointing performances by the team.
- The decision reflects the England cricket board's desire to revamp the coaching structure.
Matthew Mott has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the England men’s white-ball cricket team after crisis discussions with Rob Key, the managing director of men’s cricket at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Mott, who took the helm in May 2022 following a successful tenure with Australia’s women’s team, led England to victory in the T20 World Cup later that year. However, subsequent performances, including a lackluster defense of the 50-over World Cup in India and inconsistent results in the Caribbean, prompted Key to make a change. Under Mott's leadership, England's win rate in white-ball formats declined significantly. The team secured only 16 victories out of 34 completed One Day Internationals (ODIs), translating to a 47% win rate, compared to a 64% win rate in the three years prior to his appointment. Despite the disappointing results, Mott expressed pride in the team's character and passion, particularly highlighting their T20 World Cup triumph in 2022. Jos Buttler, who became the white-ball captain shortly after Mott's arrival, will continue in his role as the team prepares for the upcoming Champions Trophy and future white-ball competitions. The ECB is expected to seek a new coach with extensive experience, potentially including involvement in the Indian Premier League, to build on the groundwork laid by Mott and enhance the team's performance moving forward.
