The memorable event of October 31, 2016, when eight SIMI militants managed to escape from Bhopal Central Jail, resulted in a significant loss of life, including the murder of a head warder before the escapees were killed the following day. This year, prison officials have been instructed to cancel all leaves and maintain a constant presence at the jail to monitor activities closely. The director general of prisons, GP Singh, issued a letter outlining protocols for staff to follow during this period to avert potential threats. The country is currently in a festive season that encompasses major observances like Dhanteras, Diwali, and Bhai Dooj, which could lead to reduced vigilance among jail staff.
