Boxer Signals During Gender Test Debate
- Esra Yildiz Kahraman, a boxer from Turkey, recently made headlines during a gender test controversy when she held the ropes for her opponent.
- In a symbolic gesture, Kahraman created an 'X' sign with her fingers directed towards the crowd.
- This act has sparked discussions regarding gender testing in sports and the implications it holds.
Lin Yu-ting, a fighter embroiled in a gender eligibility controversy, has reached the women’s featherweight final at the Paris 2024 Olympics. In her semi-final bout, Lin decisively defeated Turkey’s Esra Yildiz Kahraman, winning every round on the judges’ scorecards. Following the match, Kahraman made an ‘X’ sign with her fingers, a gesture reminiscent of one made by Lin’s previous opponent, Svetlana Staneva, after her loss. When questioned about the meaning of the gesture, Kahraman’s team declined to comment. The participation of Lin and fellow boxer Imane Khelif has drawn scrutiny due to their disqualification from last year’s World Championships for not meeting gender eligibility criteria. The International Boxing Association, which oversaw those championships, has faced criticism for its lack of transparency and was expelled by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over financial issues. Despite this, both athletes have been cleared to compete in the Olympics, with Khelif also advancing to the finals after a swift victory in her opening bout. In the semi-finals, Lin showcased her superior speed and technique against Kahraman, who attempted a more physical approach. Lin’s effective striking earned her a unanimous decision from the judges. She is now set to face Poland’s Julia Szeremeta in the final, who recently defeated Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Nesthy Petecio. Lin expressed her determination, stating, “I am one fight closer to my goal of the gold medal.”
