Spieth had been experiencing issues with his wrist for over 15 months, which escalated to the point where the extensor carpi ulnaris tendon would pop out of its sheath, particularly affecting his performance near the greens. Prior to the surgery, Spieth attempted various treatments, including rehabilitation and rest, but these measures proved insufficient. He noted that the discomfort was not always present during swings, yet it became increasingly difficult to manage. The surgery has led him to believe that the problems with his wrist had been developing for a longer period than he initially thought, dating back to previous injuries. Spieth, who is left-handed except for golf, expressed relief and newfound confidence following the surgery, anticipating a recovery period of about three months. He acknowledged the challenges of being patient during this time, as he has a tendency to be impatient. His past injuries, including a bone spur in his left hand and cortisone shots prior to significant tournaments, have contributed to a pattern of compensatory mechanics in his game. As he aims for a career reset, Spieth hopes that this surgery will alleviate the issues that have hindered his performance, allowing him to return to form and compete effectively in future tournaments.
