MMRDA to Construct Double-Decker Bridge over Vasai Creek

In a groundbreaking development for Mumbai's infrastructure, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced plans to construct a double-decker bridge over Vasai Creek, connecting Bhayander and Naigaon. This ambitious project, which spans 4.98 kilometers and features 3+3 lanes, will incorporate a metro rail on the upper deck and a roadway for vehicular traffic on the lower deck. With a width of 30.60 meters, the bridge is set to become a unique engineering marvel in Maharashtra, significantly enhancing connectivity in the Vasai region. The project received approval from Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who also serves as the Chairman of MMRDA, on July 9, 2024. Currently, an integrated plan and structural design are being developed by consultants to address the complexities of the bridge's alignment, which traverses salt pans and forest areas. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 1,501 Crore, aimed at improving transport and communication facilities for Vasai, Bhayandar, and nearby areas, including road access to Panju Island, which is currently isolated. Additionally, the project includes the development of Metro Route 13, which will connect Mira Bhayandar to Vasai-Virar over a distance of 23 kilometers with 20 stations. This metro extension is expected to significantly boost public transport options for local residents. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been appointed as the consultant for the project, ensuring adherence to high engineering and safety standards.
