USA Team Triumphs at International Mathematical Olympiad After Four-Year Hiatus
- The USA secured first place at the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad held in Bath, England.
- The event garnered attention just weeks before the summer Olympics in Paris.
- This achievement highlights the US's strong performance in global mathematics competitions.
The United States has reclaimed the top position at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) for the first time since 2019, with a team of six talented young mathematicians achieving a total score of 192 points. The team members, selected based on their outstanding performances in the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC), include Jordan Lefkowitz, Krishna Pothapragada, Jessica Wan, Alexander Wang, Qiao (Tiger) Zhang, and Linus Tang. Notably, Jessica Wan is the first female participant on the USA IMO team since 2007. The success of the AMC and the USA team is attributed to the dedication of numerous competition managers, mathematicians, and the support from sponsors and the broader community. Michael Pearson, Executive Director of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), expressed gratitude for the network of teachers who engage with tens of thousands of students annually. He emphasized the importance of competition integrity and announced that the MAA is implementing enhanced security measures for future competitions. In recognition of the achievements of top participants, the MAA will host the Mathematical Olympiads Awards Ceremony on August 10 at MathFest in Indianapolis, IN. This event will honor the 2024 USA IMO team, the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad team, and the USA Mathematical Olympiad team, along with the Young Women in Mathematics Award winners and the 2023 Sliffe Award-winning teachers. For more information on the AMC and ways to get involved, interested parties can visit maa.org/amc, as the MAA continues to foster a vibrant community of mathematicians and enthusiasts.
