Origami Solar sets up new manufacturing line in Houston, raising industry eyebrows

In the United States, specifically in Houston, Texas, Origami Solar has announced a significant development in the renewable energy sector. On December 10, 2024, the company revealed that it has partnered with Unimacts to establish its first frame roll-forming manufacturing line at Unimacts' facility. This new line is designed to produce steel solar module frames for evaluating customer needs and for mass production, aligning with Origami Solar's goal to manufacture steel frames domestically by 2025. This endeavor is a notable stride towards the commercialization of Origami Solar’s patented high-performance steel frame designs. It promises to contribute to establishing a fully domestic supply chain, thereby reducing dependency on foreign production. The 100% domestic supply chain is expected to further enhance transit times to U.S. module manufacturers, minimizing the risks associated with international trade, including tariffs. Moreover, this initiative will increase the minimum domestic content of the products, helping the company and its partners qualify for the benefits outlined in the Inflation Reduction Act's Investment Tax Credits. As part of this strategic plan, Origami Solar aims to build a robust U.S.-based supply chain. The Houston facility is not only the first step but also has plans to accommodate multiple roll-forming lines capable of both short production runs and high-speed automated production as demand increases. The location was deliberately chosen due to its proximity to a growing number of module manufacturers within Texas, which allows for an enhanced response to customer needs while reducing the vulnerabilities tied to long international supply chains. With anticipation of substantial market opportunities, Origami Solar is collaborating with key Tier 1 and Tier 2 module manufacturers.
