INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A sergeant with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has been arrested on child exploitation charges following an investigation by the department's internet crimes against children unit. The officer, a 12-year veteran, was taken into custody on Monday, although his name has not been released as he has not yet been officially charged by prosecutors. The investigation began on August 6, prompted by a cyber tip from The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. This organization alerts law enforcement to potential child exploitation material found online. Authorities traced an Internet Protocol address linked to the sergeant's personal home router, and subsequent evidence from search warrants confirmed his identity as a police officer. In response to the allegations, Police Chief Chris Bailey announced the sergeant's suspension on Monday, pending a recommendation for termination to the Civilian Police Merit Board. Chief Bailey expressed his shock and dismay at the situation, stating, “I am profoundly shocked and disturbed by the allegations involving an IMPD officer.” He emphasized that the alleged actions represent a significant betrayal of the department's commitment to protect and serve the community. The case highlights ongoing concerns regarding child exploitation and the responsibilities of law enforcement officers in safeguarding vulnerable populations. The investigation continues as the department seeks to address the serious nature of the allegations against one of its own.
