Story

SACRAMENTO – City officials in Sacramento are actively seeking community input on the future of a 102-acre plot of land in south Sacramento that has remained vacant for over two years. The city acquired the property south of Meadowview Road for more than $12 million with initial plans to create a parking lot for residents living in their vehicles. However, no concrete development plans have materialized since the purchase. Councilmember Mai Vang emphasized the community's desire for a project that would serve as a catalyst for the area. The city is now engaging residents to gather ideas on potential developments. Senior planner Elizabeth Boyd noted that the process of investigating viable options and conducting financial analyses is time-consuming, contributing to the delay in development. Among the proposals being considered is the construction of a youth sports complex, which could require an investment exceeding $120 million. Vang highlighted the necessity of forming public-private partnerships to facilitate any development. Additionally, some community members have expressed interest in new housing options, while an analysis has indicated that the site is unsuitable for a hotel, office space, or a full-sized grocery store. The city plans to compile the feedback gathered from a recent community meeting and an online survey, with the results set to be presented to the city council in October. However, any chosen development is still years away from realization.
