Anne Arundel County library introduces controversial Chromebook lending program

In an effort to increase digital access for the community, the Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL) launched its Chromebook lending program at the Brooklyn Park branch on December 4, 2024. This initiative is part of a broader goal to bridge the digital divide, which has become increasingly significant in recent years, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. AACPL first introduced the ability to borrow Chromebooks and hotspots in 2020 to assist patrons who needed technology to navigate remote learning and other digital services during the public health crisis. The library had initially offered 50 kits for a short borrowing period of seven days, reflecting an urgent need for digital tools among the community's residents. Since its inception, the program has seen considerable demand, leading to changes in availability and borrowing terms. Library officials announced that patrons have checked out more than 470 hotspots and over 300 Chromebooks in just six months, illustrating the program's success and the significant need for such resources. To expand access, AACPL now provides 56 Chromebook kits with hotspots available for checkout for a longer duration of up to 12 weeks, which allows users more time to benefit from this technology. Currently, there are approximately 200 customers on the waitlist for a hotspot and 110 on the list for a Chromebook, highlighting ongoing demand. The funding for this ambitious program comes from collaborations with Wellpoint, T-Mobile, and the Anne Arundel County Public Library Foundation, showcasing a commitment to enhancing community resources through joint efforts. These organizations recognize that digital inclusion is crucial for enabling all community members to participate fully in society, work, education, and civic engagement in an increasingly digital world. The library continues to take steps to improve access to technology and information resources to address barriers faced by many residents.
