Mother Sends Kids to Camp in Honor of Slain Teacher
- Teacher murdered during the 2018 Parkland high school massacre.
- Mother sends kids to camp in her son's honor.
- Continuing the legacy of the slain teacher through summer camp opportunities.
This summer, the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund provided an opportunity for 264 children, aged 9 to 16, to attend sleepaway camps across Florida, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. Many of these children come from underprivileged backgrounds or have been affected by gun violence. Beigel Schulman, a representative of the fund, emphasized the importance of removing these children from their challenging environments, allowing them to experience the joys of childhood in a supportive setting. Scott Beigel, a geography teacher and camp enthusiast, founded the fund to give children the same enriching experiences he enjoyed as a youth. Starting as a camper at age seven, he progressed to counselor and administrator roles, ultimately dedicating his life to helping others. The fund also offers counselor trainee positions for older campers, providing them with leadership opportunities and a chance to build positive relationships. Camp experiences have proven transformative for many participants. As one camper, Kozak, noted, the camp environment allows for positive interactions with law enforcement, which contrasts with their experiences at home. Campers have shared their fears and triumphs, such as overcoming challenges on ropes courses, fostering camaraderie and resilience among peers. The initiative not only promotes personal growth but also encourages socialization among children from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of unity and shared experience. Through these camps, the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund continues to impact the lives of young individuals, helping them envision a brighter future.
