PARIS (AP) — Dawn Staley, a celebrated figure in women’s basketball, is experiencing the Paris Olympics from a fresh perspective: as a fan. Having participated in six previous Olympics—three as a player, two as an assistant coach, and one as head coach—Staley has a remarkable track record, with each of those teams securing gold medals. This time, however, she is relishing the opportunity to witness the games without the pressures of competition. Staley's illustrious Olympic journey includes gold medal victories at the 1996 Atlanta, 2000 Sydney, and 2004 Athens Games. Transitioning from player to coach, she served as an assistant for the 2008 and 2016 teams before leading the U.S. women’s basketball team to gold in Tokyo in 2021. In Paris, she is taking a break from her coaching duties, allowing herself to enjoy the festivities and achievements of other athletes. Despite her vacation-like experience, Staley remains engaged with her coaching responsibilities. She took to social media to connect with potential opponents for her powerhouse program, showcasing her commitment to the sport even while enjoying her time off. Staley's Olympic experience took a lighthearted turn when she celebrated the U.S. women’s soccer team’s gold medal win over Brazil, winning a bet with former Gamecocks star Kamila Cardoso. “It’s been an awesome time,” Staley remarked, highlighting the joy of her unique role at this year’s Games.
