Lewis Hamilton Advocates for F1 Race in Africa & Refugee Rights

Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula One world champion, has expressed his commitment to supporting refugees following a poignant visit to Africa during the summer break. Ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, Hamilton shared insights from his travels to Senegal, Morocco, and the Maratane refugee settlement in Mozambique, where he witnessed the impactful work of the UN refugee agency, UNHCR. He emphasized the importance of firsthand experience in understanding the challenges faced by displaced individuals, stating, “If you don’t see it and experience it... you couldn’t even imagine.” During his visit, Hamilton was struck by the stark realities of life in refugee camps and the resilience of those affected. He acknowledged the lack of recognition for the plight of refugees in the UK and expressed a desire to contribute positively, saying, “How can I get on board, how can I help?” He also highlighted the beauty and vastness of Africa, urging others to appreciate the continent beyond its struggles. As he prepares for his 200th race at the Dutch Grand Prix, Hamilton reflected on his career, noting that while he is focused on securing his fourth championship, he feels much of his journey has already been accomplished. The 26-year-old driver, who made his F1 debut at 17, is contemplating his future in the sport but remains open to the evolving landscape of racing regulations. “I just want to see how it goes,” he remarked, indicating that decisions about his next contract will come later.
