The Dallas Cowboys have made history by becoming the first professional sports team valued at over $10 billion, according to Sportico’s 2024 NFL rankings released on Tuesday. The franchise, owned by Jerry Jones, is now valued at $10.32 billion, a significant increase from the previous estimate of $9.2 billion in February. Jones, who purchased the team in 1989 for approximately $140 million, has transformed the Cowboys into a financial juggernaut, despite the team’s recent struggles on the field. While the Cowboys enjoyed immense success in the 1990s, winning three Super Bowls, they have faced challenges in recent years, securing only five playoff victories since their last championship in 1995. The team’s latest postseason ended in disappointment with a Wild Card round loss to the Green Bay Packers, despite a strong regular season and the presence of MVP runner-up Dak Prescott. Nevertheless, the Cowboys remain a popular franchise, generating an estimated $1.2 billion in revenue in 2023, significantly outpacing the second-ranked Los Angeles Rams. In the broader NFL landscape, the Rams are valued at $7.79 billion, followed by the New England Patriots at $7.31 billion and the San Francisco 49ers at $6.86 billion. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers saw the largest increase, rising to 16th place with a value of $5.5 billion, while the Cincinnati Bengals are the least valuable team at $4.71 billion. The average NFL franchise is now worth $5.93 billion, reflecting the league's financial dominance. As the Cowboys prepare for the 2024-25 season, they will kick off on September 8 against the Cleveland Browns, followed by their first home game against the New Orleans Saints on September 15.
