Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced the appointment of two new independent senators: veteran broadcaster Charles Adler and Saskatchewan hospital executive Tracy Muggli. This decision reflects the ongoing efforts to diversify the Senate and enhance its representation of various sectors in Canadian society. Charles Adler, who emigrated from Hungary as a refugee, has had a distinguished career spanning over 50 years as a radio host and journalist. He is recognized for his advocacy of human rights and Canadian democracy, and he will represent Manitoba in the Senate. His extensive experience in media is expected to bring a unique perspective to legislative discussions. Tracy Muggli, on the other hand, brings a wealth of experience from the health sector. As a registered social worker and the current executive director of St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon, she has a strong background in public service within health and social services. Her appointment is anticipated to enhance the Senate's focus on health-related issues and social welfare. Both Adler and Muggli were appointed by Governor General Mary Simon following recommendations from the independent advisory board for Senate appointments, established in 2016. This board aims to ensure that appointments are made based on merit and the needs of the country, reinforcing the Senate's role as a chamber of sober second thought.
