Wilko to Open New Store in Uxbridge Following Rebranding
- Wilko has opened its seventh new store since its comeback.
- The brand marks its continued expansion with the latest store opening.
- This marks a significant milestone for Wilko following its collapse and subsequent relaunch.
Wilko is set to open a new store in Uxbridge, west London, this autumn, marking its seventh location since being acquired and rebranded by rival budget retailer The Range. This new opening is significant as it represents Wilko's first store in the capital since its relaunch after a dramatic collapse last year, which resulted in nearly 12,500 job losses and the closure of 400 stores across the UK. The retailer's troubles began long before its administration in August 2023, with signs of financial distress emerging six years prior when it initiated a redundancy consultation affecting 4,000 jobs. The company reported a £65 million loss that year and struggled to compete with rivals like B&M and Poundland, which gained market share by offering lower prices and a more efficient supply chain. Following Wilko's collapse, B&M and the owner of Poundland expressed interest in acquiring some of its stores. Ultimately, CDS Superstores, trading as The Range, secured a £5 million deal for Wilko's remaining stores and intellectual property. The Range, founded by entrepreneur Chris Dawson in 1989, currently operates 213 stores across the UK. Alex Simpkin, CEO of CDS Superstores, emphasized the company's commitment to revitalizing the Wilko brand and bringing it back to local communities. He expressed enthusiasm for the positive reception received in existing locations and highlighted the importance of the Uxbridge store as a return to Greater London.
