Russia"s Kursk counteroffensive retakes settlements from Ukraine

Russian forces have initiated a significant counteroffensive in the Kursk region, claiming to have regained control over approximately 10 settlements previously captured by Ukrainian troops. Major General Apti Alaudinov, who leads Chechnya's Akhmat special forces, reported these developments to TASS, asserting that the situation is favorable for Russian forces. Pro-Russian war bloggers have corroborated these claims, indicating that Russian troops have pushed Ukrainian forces east of the Malaya Loknya River, particularly south of Snagost. This counteroffensive follows a month after a substantial Ukrainian assault, which marked the largest foreign attack on Russian territory since World War II. Ukrainian forces had successfully breached the border into Kursk, utilizing drones, heavy weaponry, and artillery, some of which were supplied by Western nations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy characterized this operation as an effort to compel peace negotiations with Russia and to establish a buffer zone against further Russian aggression in the Sumy region. Despite the Ukrainian offensive, Russian forces have continued to make gains in the eastern Donbas region, with reports indicating an acceleration of their operations since August. Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu stated that Moscow has seized around 1,000 square kilometers of territory in Donbas during this period.
