New Arts Center Opens in Upstate New York, Aims to Revitalize Community Culture

A new arts center, known as The Mill, has officially opened its doors in an old flour mill on Main Street in Upstate New York. The venue, which features art galleries and a performance space, was transformed over three years by its owners, Catherine and Taylor Haskins. The couple envisions The Mill as a "cultural oasis" that will foster community engagement and appreciation for the arts. The Haskinses, both 52, financed the project entirely with their own resources, drawing inspiration from their experiences in New York City, where they witnessed the revitalization of industrial spaces. They expressed a desire to create a space that goes beyond mere commercial development, aiming instead to cultivate a vibrant cultural hub. The opening event featured a performance by harpist Zeena Parkins, who praised the initiative, likening it to similar cultural spaces she has encountered in countries like Japan, Poland, and France. Parkins emphasized the importance of passionate individuals in driving such projects, highlighting the trust that develops between artists and their communities. As The Mill begins its journey, the Haskinses hope to attract not only jazz musicians but a diverse array of artists and audiences, ultimately enriching the local cultural landscape and providing a platform for creative expression.
