In Arlington, Virginia, on May 22, 2025, Lightshift Energy announced plans to construct a significant energy storage project in Vermont. This initiative, which will be stationed at GlobalFoundries’ semiconductor facility in Essex Junction, represents the largest battery energy storage project in the state. The project has successfully completed all required permitting and contracting, with construction slated to begin later in 2025 and operations expected to commence by early 2026. This energy storage system, designed with a capacity of 16MW/52MWh, is intended to enhance energy management at the manufacturing site. By integrating this storage technology directly with GlobalFoundries’ switchyard, the project aims to optimize energy use during peak demand periods. The system will store electricity when it is abundant and discharge it during peak periods, alleviating stress on the regional grid while also providing substantial cost savings for GlobalFoundries. This strategy enhances the overall resilience of the electrical grid in the region. The initiative is aligned with Vermont's clean energy goals and serves to reduce dependency on fossil fuels, particularly during times of high demand when natural gas predominates the state's energy mix.
