Inspectors arrived to conduct the annual inspection and noted a strong smell of decomposition. Upon investigation, they found a door hidden behind a cardboard display that Cotter requested they not enter. Despite this request, the inspectors proceeded and discovered several bodies in various stages of decomposition, some reportedly having been there for around 15 years. The disturbing findings led to an immediate suspension of the mortuary's operations and prompted a criminal investigation by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
